A bit of experimentation here. The roses were dead, but had just dried out and not lost any petals. So I set the camera to macro mode, f/22, ISO 100 and turned off the lights, so a nice long exposure. I then used a torch to highlight the areas I wanted to be exposed. Here is the result.
